By Rev. Mary Johnson, Candidacy

Our synod currently has 15 candidates, or seminarians, preparing for ordained or lay rostered ministry in the ELCA, as well as many others in the process of applying for candidacy.

Who are our candidates? They are men and women, married and single, ranging in age from 23 to 61 years old. Some are full-time students, and some are part-time. While many live near or on a seminary campus, some commute from, or study from, their homes in upstate New York. We have students enrolled at seven of the ELCA's eight seminaries, and in special courses of study and distance learning classes.

Our candidates come from all kinds of different congregations, church backgrounds, family situations, work histories and life experiences. They have different gifts, talents, skills, personalities and educational backgrounds. So, what do they have in common?

Besides their strong faith, they all share a commitment to God's mission in the world and particular gifts needed for public ministry -- for leading the Church in today's world and in the future. All have had their call, gifts and leadership potential confirmed by the Church.

The Church needs leaders with a heart for God's people and a passion for mission - and our Synod is blessed with many who are offering themselves in this service. We thank God for them and their willingness to serve! If you believe God may be calling you to serve as a rostered leader, talk to your pastor, call the Synod office, or contact me for more information at mjohnson@upstatenysynod.org.

The financial cost of seminary education - usually four years of study beyond college -- is significant, and the resulting student debt can impact congregations, as well as candidates. Your gift to the Feed the Roots of Leadership campaign can make a difference.
